Greetings to you, aspiring commanders and sea dogs!

With World of Warships Legends Alpha impending, we have thought it would be a good idea to shed some light on the design decisions, or rather approach, that we are taking with WoWs:L.

This also serves as opportunity to introduce myself to you, so that you know whom to direct your constructive and polite feedback to when your favourite ship gets nerfed.:) I am AINTD and I am the Lead Designer here at WoWs:L, working diligently to bring the best World of Warships experience on consoles possible. I have had a fair share of console development experience in the past and it is my intention to put it to good use in WoWs:L.

Tons of design or design-related decisions need to be made on daily basis on a title as big as World of Warships. A lot of them are fun to work on, some are a tad tedious, and some are downright annoying. It is our job, however, to answer all the questions and solve all the issues we encounter during development, so that when you get your hands on the game, you actually enjoy playing it and have a good time.

Many of you may be wondering whether WOWL is "just a port" of the PC version of the game. Short answer is "No, it is not just a port". While we are borrowing existing assets as well as aiming to preserve core of the World of Warships experience that makes it so engaging, we also subject all existing features to scrutiny, never shying away from updating a feature that could use it. It is not time nor place to get into specifics, but I do want to outline some fundamental ideas behind our approach.

First thing is first: a gaming console is an entirely different to PC platform, with its strengths and weaknesses spanning across hardware, networking and last, but not least, input method.

World of Warships relies heavily on keyboard+mouse scheme that does not really exist on consoles, so our first goal was to make sure that all mechanics translate well to controller. We have made great strides towards achieving comfortable controls and this is one of the things I would really appreciate your feedback on during the upcoming Alpha. After all, most amazing graphics and smartest mechanics in the world will be of little consequence, if you are constantly struggling with the controls. A console controller works rather differently to a mouse. Some actions are more intuitive and easier to execute, while other (e.g. aiming) require substantial updates. It is not a good thing or a bad thing - it is just different.

Complementing core gameplay is our meta-game and it also is getting meaningful updates. These span progression system, port UI, social and many other features. We see WoWs:L as a great opportunity to refresh existing mechanics without having to tiptoe around status quo. We aim to make the experience more dynamic, varied and streamlined (do not confuse with "dumbed down"). At the same time, we want to remove/change some of the features that, we believe, would thwart our players. This is both challenging and exciting times for us and I hope that you - our audience, people who we are doing this for and whose satisfaction we take to heart - will join the ride and become part of the experience of bringing World of Warships to consoles.

There are many other things that I would be eager to discuss, but all in due time. For now I encourage you all to take part in Alpha, play the game, scrutinize it, talk to us about it - we listen!

Happy sailing!

Just a little intro from our Lead Game Designer, hope you like what he had to say 🙂 Please keep in mind that he's currently working day and night and spamming his message box won't bear much fruit. For all your outstanding questions Discord (https://discord.gg/m8qVMbS) is the best place currently. We try to share as much as we can, but of course, until we're in the open stages info is very limited.

Thankyou for this, I am sure we all realise the hardships/ shortfalls that come with adapting a game such as WoWS to console. But I have faith and look forward to seeing what you as devs have chosen to do with the game.

Really anxious to see how it will come out. If anyone asks me (but no one did), PS4 specifically do accept keyboard + Mouse input. A hybrid solution could be a solution (but I figure that is already widelly known). Anyway, thanks a lot, WOW:L team for the hard work! looking forward to see the outcome of your work and assist anyway possible (with the best part... playing) I can.

For reasons so obvious there is no need to explain too.

So does Xbox but when they say borrowing they don't mean the controls lol .Wargaming console uses controllers only

I’ve thought quite a bit about translating WoWs into a controller scheme and I’m excited to find out what kind of solutions we come up with!  I’ve certainly had my own ideas and I hope to be part of the Alpha to see how they stack up!

Being that I’m a WoTC veteran and Supertester, I certainly have no illusions about WoWSL  being a unique experience.  I also have tons of admiration and respect for the WoWs developers and have every confidence that we’ll still get to play an amazing and exciting game!

I genuinely appreciate your openness and dedication to working with, and for, the community!  It makes us so much more than just “players”, it makes us “partners”!

It's been a while since Keyboard and mouse play on PS4 and Xbox… You never heard about T.A.C 4? Fact is Console players have both of the best world. Nice hardware to play and Keyboard and mouse when needed, and remain undetectables.

you only have to look at what a mess sea of thieves has turned into because of its cross platform play, not saying its a bad game but it does cause a bit of strife and toxicity because of console players are just getting turned to mash each time, all in all I really wish the best for this to do well, im no console pleb, I do prefer the PC, but it is a true too that I really wish for this to succeed, because all I can say is that its about bloody time that there was news on this, hopefully I can play with my brother because he likes to play console, but for sure I could already guess that one of the major challenges was already going to be controls, especially where it comes down to aiming, its also fair to say that till the carrier rework we wont be seeing them till after they get reworked on PC am I right?

Hello All,

Very exciting!! I have been playing World of Warships on my PC for years and I am looking foward to being able to enjoy this title on my Xbox One X.  Best question is when does the Alpha officially start?  Is the title going to Support 4K and Xbox One X enhancements?

I've always thought after playing on pc that a controller would feel great. Love the way Tanks feels on the controller vs the pc I have no doubt that with the right layout it will feel natural.  Thanks for the intro and can't wait to test it.

Yes I know about it, but I shouldn't have to buy it to keep things fair on the controller side of things. You see what I am saying?

Mouse and Keyboard is NOT officially supported on Xbone, YET. therefore you need 3rd party hardware to even use them, and therefore, is CHEATING.

I wouldn’t worry about it.  On Consoles, controllers are the expected default and I doubt there’s many games right now that would support mouse and keyboard.  WoWSL will be made for exclusive use of controllers since that’s what you’re supposed to be using on a Console anyway.

i hope so, i run into far too many people using mouse keyboard in rainbowsix ranked, and they always have the advantage.

I'm just wondering when the ship starts sailing, I'm currently sitting on the p00p deck contemplating the future.

Will I return to my girl after the war? I don't know but the sea & it's great battles through Tidal-Waves are what I foresee.

When I try to imagine the control layout for WoWS:L, I keep thinking Battlestations: Midway and Battlestations: Pacific.  That series is the only one available on consoles that focuses around giving you control of large, complex warships from the 20th century.  To me they were really fun games, but their mechanics, to me at least, didn't provide as much PvP fun as it could have.  I hope, and am fairly confident, that whatever you guys come up with will knock it out of the park.  Best of luck and good sailing to you.
