Through the Spy Glass: Borodino

During the design phase of the Project 82 heavy cruiser, the Ministry of the Shipbuilding Industry of the U.S.S.R. commissioned drafts for a "small battleship"—a vessel featuring one or two turrets housing large- and medium-caliber guns, as well as reinforced bow armor. In 1951 and 1952, nine preliminary drafts were produced. One of these designs, which included two triple-gun turrets housing 406 mm guns, was recommended for further development. However, following Stalin's death, the construction of heavy artillery ships lost relevance, and the project was ultimately abandoned.

Borodino is a Soviet Tier VII Premium battleship. She has noteworthy damage output for her caliber, proficient armor-piercing penetration capabilities, and commendable accuracy (without the typical Soviet dispersion), placing her as a solid performer in the battleship category.

Despite slightly reduced damage per minute (DPM) due to her configuration of six barrels across two turrets, she compensates for this with enhanced turret durability. In terms of consumables, Borodino comes equipped with a practical selection, including Damage Control Party with unlimited charges and improved healing capabilities (like those of Giuseppe Verdi), plus long-range Radar.

We recommend fielding the ship in a sniper configuration. With this in mind, we suggest the following Commander: Lev Galler with his base trait Flaming Arrow, improving your battleship’s main gun HE shell damage by up to 5%. While Borodino will likely be more effective slinging AP shells, this improvement to HE will help against heavy bow-tanking targets.

For the skill selection:

  • Flammable Cannonier, improving your battleship’s main battery range by up to 8% and your shell grouping by up to 5%; however, it also worsens your survivability by increasing your risk of catching fire by up to 13%.
  • Gyrating Drillbits, improving your battleship’s main battery gun traverse speed and increasing the AP shell damage by up to 10%; however, this skill has a negative trade-off that worsens your battleship’s maximum speed by up to 10%.
  • Marksmanship, improving your main battery dispersion by up to 10% but also worsening your rudder-shift time by 5%.
  • Reaching Out XXL, improving your battleship’s main battery range by up to 4%.
  • Fight Fire With Fire, removing damage-over-time effects (fire and flooding) when you have three active fires and your Damage Control Party is on cooldown. Additionally reduces fire damage to your ship for each active fire by up to 15%.

For inspirations:

  • Angelo Iachino, improving your battleship's main battery shell grouping when shooting at battleships, cruisers, and destroyers by up to 3%, 7%, and 3%, respectively.
  • Paolo Di Revel, improving your battleship's main battery reload time by up to 5.5%.
